What the Adhan is Teaching Me About Prayer

“It’s 4:23am and Hadeel wakes up to the sound of the adhan (the Muslim call to prayer). This is the first of five times that she will pray today, just like every other day. She slips out of her bed and scuffles sleepy-eyed over to the sink. She whispers, “Bismallah al-rahman al-rahim” (in the name of God, the most gracious, the most merciful) before beginning the proper cleansing ritual for prayer time. The faucet creaks as she turns the water on; she washes her hands. Three times.

Learning to Be Persistent in Prayer

I want to be as persistent in writing as God is teaching me to bein prayer.  So post is coming at you a little later this week due to a several-day excursion to Spokane, Washington for my daughter’s volleyball tournament.  But I haven’t stopped writing.  In fact, I’ve got a devotional up at devoteableapp.com today on prayer.

 

Building on the lessons I learned on vacation over spring break,

God is showing me that I need to shake up my prayer life in many areas.

Rest and Refreshment in the Lord

“Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him.  As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.”  Hosea 6:3 NIV

 

A month ago, my preacher taught on the importance of rest and refreshment.  I paid attention and took notes observing the Sabbath.  I even jotted down a reference to a story he told about a bird named chippy.  To save my life I can not remember what that story was.  The sermon didn’t really resonate with me, but I’m so glad I recorded the scripture references to go back to because it resonates in a major way with me now.  Continue Reading
