Joy and Sorrow in Community

June 23, 2023 by Lauren 10 Comments

I came across an old proverb a few months ago on joy and sorrow that I keep circling back to chew on: “Shared joy is double joy.  Shared sorrow is half sorrow.”

These thoughts are beautiful in their simplicity, and yet the more I meditate on them, the more depth I find.  I have written many times on the importance of community.  And the challenges I have with it.  And the longing I have for it, as well as the blessings I find in others.  But community holds a special place in my examination of joy – my word of the year.

Breaking Down Joy and Sorrow with Others

I bought a little house decoration I found on clearance for my bedroom.  It says, “Double Each Other’s Joy”.  A reminder in the room I share with my husband.  And while I think intentionally doing things that would bring joy to a spouse or a friend is a great way to show love, I see the wisdom in sharing our joy with our loved ones as well.

Think about the first thing you want to do when something great happens.  Who do you want to tell?  I know the super spiritual thing would be to pray with gratitude immediately.  But my first instinct is usually to tell my husband and then my mom.  And then depending on how good it is, maybe a couple of friends and my sisters.  But I don’t believe this is an unspiritual reaction.  One of the bible verses I am memorizing this year says, “I have so much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink.  Instead, I hope to visit and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.”  2 John 12 NIV

Even the apostle John found joy in a face to face visit.  That passage often makes me think of my best friend, who lives in another state.  We call each other often to catch up, but sometimes we take advantage of FaceTime technology.  I just love to see her face and expressions when I share my news.  Seeing her – even on a little screen – is the next best thing to visiting in person.  It brings me joy!

The Flip Side

Why do we need community in our sorrow?  Galatians 6:2 says, “Carry each others’ burdens and so you will fulfill the law of Christ.” NIV  Western culture tries to convince us that we are only strong when we are independent.  That we can handle the thing and do it ourselves.  But that’s not God’s culture.  The truth is, no one truly does anything alone.

A couple of years ago when Kylie Jenner appeared in Forbes magazine as the youngest self-made billionaire, she created an uproar.  She built a make-up empire from money that she made modeling.  Sure.  And I don’t mean to take away from the business savvy she must have to turn it into billions, but she came from money.  And a famous family.  These things created a serious leg up that most people will never have.  As did Donald Trump’s loan of $1 million from his father, a sum the average joe would never qualify for.  And may that be the last time I use a Trump or a Kardashian as a devotional illustration!

Back to my point.  We all come from somewhere or something that helps us along our way.  God first and foremost.  Not only does He own all and give all, but 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 NIV describes Him as the ultimate comforter “who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”  That’s how shared sorrow can be half the sorrow.  When we carry it with others, it doesn’t feel as heavy.  God comforts us, we comfort others and in turn, they comfort us through life’s obstacles – big and small.  It’s a cycle that keeps going when we participate in it.

And it all leads to joy.  Share your joy below so we can rejoice with you or share your sorrow below so we can comfort you through prayers and encouragement.  And don’t forget to share with your friends and family members IRL.  In this small obedience, we can bring the kingdom of God to earth.

The Cross

June 16, 2023 by Lauren 4 Comments

“I am poured out like water,
    and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart has turned to wax;
    it has melted within me.
15 My mouth[a] is dried up like a potsherd,
    and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
    you lay me in the dust of death.

16 Dogs surround me,
a pack of villains encircles me;
they pierce[b] my hands and my feet.
17 All my bones are on display;
people stare and gloat over me. ” Psalm 22:14-17 NIV

Do you wear a cross necklace?  Or earrings?  Do you own a t-shirt with a cross.  Or maybe you decorate your home with them.  Have you ever thought this custom odd?

Ancient Romans used the cross to torture, humiliate and kill people.  An instrument of cruelty, curses and shame.  And I have several hanging on my wall.

The prophesy above from the book of Psalms describes someone (Jesus) hanging from a cross.  Bones out of joint.  Heart weak and useless.  Mouth a kind of dry we can’t even comprehend.  Spikes empaling the hands and feet with agony on display for gawkers to see.  Death and torture happened on crosses.  And yet we display them with respect.  Why would we clean up such an ugly thing for the world to see?

Why the Cross?

Because without the cross, we are ugly things.  And our clean up could not happen without the blood Jesus shed on the cross.  We are terrible sinners – every last one of us.  But Jesus.  He, who had never sinned, took on the death punishment for us so that we can be in relationship with God forever.  There is nothing more beautiful in all the world.

If you have questions about how Christ’s death brings us life with Him or how to accept this gift, please reach out to me by comment or send me a personal email at [email protected].  There is nothing I would rather talk about.  The cross is beautiful because of Jesus.

Confirmation Bias and God’s Will

June 9, 2023 by Lauren 4 Comments

Every single one of us holds inside ourselves certain biases.  I have written about racial bias many times, but confirmation bias consumes my thoughts this week.  Have you heard this term before? Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek out information that supports one’s own beliefs or opinions.  Based on our upbringing, environment and experiences, we bring a set of predilections and inclinations to every relationship, conversation, book we read and movie we watch.

Our biases can be positive or negative, but they can become dangerous when put on God and His Word.  Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” NIV

Can We Really Know God’s Will?

I think it’s safe to say that anyone who believes in God is interested in His will.  We pray to know it and we pray for it to happen.  But I see the global church increasingly aligning with the pattern of this world and less to God’s will as written for us in His Word.

What does it mean to test and approve what God’s will is?  I firmly believe that God speaks to His children in a myriad of ways.  And if we aren’t careful, we can become convinced He is directing us along the path of our confirmation bias.  Can we ever be 100% certain of God’s answer to our prayers?  Depends on what our question is.  God makes it very clear what He wills for us on many, many issues…in His Word.  The Bible is our ultimate authority and the plumb line with which we should measure everything!  So the first and most important thing we can do is to put what we believe we are hearing or thinking up against God’s Word.

How to Go About Eliminating Confirmation Bias

There are lots of topical study helps.  How should I treat my spouse?  Should I lie to my boss to save my job?  Who is Jesus?  How can I be saved?  Should I tell my co-worker about Jesus?  These questions and so…many…more can be found in the Bible.  Seek out a scripture, read it in context (the whole chapter or more.  Not just the verse.), and look up the original language to make sure you know what the author intended.  My favorite tools for this practice are biblehub.com and blueletterbible.com.  Our Heavenly Father will never give you revelation or direction that contradicts His Word.  Period.

But what if you can’t find your issue in a bible index?  The scriptures won’t tell you if you should go back to school.  Or whether you should take a new job.  Or whether buying a new home is a good idea.  (Although at times there are underlying issues that God’s Word will address).  In situations when correct theology or sin are not involved, asking for guidance from mature, godly men and women in your life can help you draw wise conclusions.  But remember, everyone brings confirmation bias to the table.  So hold everything said – including from the pulpit – up against the Holy Scriptures.  In other words, see point number one.  It is the most important point.
