Misheard Lyrics, Part 2…and Grace and Truth Link Up

April 23, 2021 by Lauren 26 Comments

This week I’m taking another break from the serious to bring you the rest of our mistaken lyrics.  Take a look at last week’s list for more silliness.  Or start here.  And check out the links if you aren’t sure of the song.  That makes it more fun.  I’m finding laughter to be pretty good medicine right now.

Hymns/ Praise Music

  1. I can’t remember where I heard this one, but someone thought Chris Tomlin’s Our God, which starts “Water, You turned into wine” said “Who do you turn to and whine?”
  2. A gym friend’s son loved to sing Great are You, Lord as “We pour out our brains to you” instead of “pour out our praise”.  Both are probably correct.
  3. The next one comes complements of my daughter, who has belted praise tunes since toddlerhood.  The song Days of Elijah pumped us up with the words, “Lift your voice, it’s the year of jubilee.  And out of Zion’s hill salvation comes!”  Allie, who liked Hannah Montana, sang “and Miley Cyrus hill salvation comes”.  Heaven help us.
  4. This next one is actually a pop song, but the wrong lyrics put it in this category.  There’s a line in Kharma Chameleon by Culture Club that states, “Every day is like survival”.  I bet they would be thriving instead of surviving with this change, “Every day I read my Bible”.

Everything Else

  1.   I think most of us have heard Credence Clearwater Revival’s Bad Moon Rising.  And more than one of you thought the chorus line “There’s a bad moon on the rise” was pointing out the “bathroom on the right”.  Both important things to know.
  2. My bonus son once thought Def Leppard’s hair anthem Pour Some Sugar on Me, sounded like “Pour some shook up Ramen.”  Delicious?  Maybe.  Sticky sweet?  Nope.
  3. A minute or two ago, the Steve Miller Band asked a “big ol’ jet airliner” not to carry them away too far.  But my friend’s husband thought they were letting him know that “big ol’ Jeff left a light on”.
  4. Even though the Joe Cocker/ Jennifer Warnes movie soundtrack duet was named Up Where We Belong, I have personally heard it sung, “Love lift us up where we were wrong.”  I don’t think I’d want to go back to that place.
  5. The next three come courtesy of my daughter Allie Rose.  I’m a little embarrassed to admit she had even heard this song as a toddler, but she thought she was “feeling so fly like a cheese stick”.  The real words (and title):  Like a G6.
  6. Several years ago British artist Lorde landed on the music scene with Royals.  As the singer daydreams of being rich and powerful, she exclaims, “You can call me Queen Bee.”  But my Allie sang, “You can call me green beans!”  It’s doubly funny since she hates green beans now.
  7. In Blank Space, T Swift admitted, “I’ve got a long list of ex-lovers.”  But for a while my girl thought “I gotta love the Starbucks lovers.” I could make a joke here about the way we like both coffee and men, but that would be in poor taste.  😉
  8. As if the name Manfred Mann’s Earth Band isn’t already a little confusing, there have been many mistaken interpretations of the lyrics to their song, Blinded by the Light.  The correct words:  “Blinded by the light.  Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night.”  An old high school friend sang it, “Wrapped up like a douche, another roller in the night.”  Neither makes sense to me.
  9. Boy band Color Me Badd added some spanish flair to their ballad I Adore Mi Amor.  One online friend wanted to know why they were telling us they like Mia more!  What’s so great about her anyway?
  10. Get out your butterfly collars, but be careful.  Apparently “burn, baby, burn, disco inferno” sounds like “burn, baby, burn, the school is burning”.  Might have been wishful thinking on that kid’s part.
  11. Toto singing ,”I bless the rains down in Africa” didn’t make much sense to us.  But “I guess it rains down in Africa” would be a weird wondering to put to music.
  12. A pop song about Mozart?  Originally written in German?  Rock me Amadeus was a huge hit for Falco, and misunderstood by many.  Two alternate versions of “Amadeus, Amadeus”;  “I’m a dentist, I’m a dentist” and “Hot potatoes, hot potatoes.”
  13. To wrap up (I promise there won’t be a third post on this.), I must confess that I laughed way to loud and entirely too long about this one.  Paul Young ripped my young heart out singing of lost love in Every Time You Go Away…”You take a piece of me with you.”  Well now I can’t stop singing, “You take a piece of meat with you.”  Yall, I can’t.

Reader friend, if you are still here, thank you.  Thank you for going along on this ride for what can only be described as “low brow humor”.  But I’ve loved every minute of it.  If you have your own misheard lyric, I hope you will share in the comments below so that the laughter continues.

Misheard Lyrics…and Grace and Truth Link Up

April 16, 2021 by Lauren 39 Comments

Last week I used misheard lyrics to illustrated a point about God’s character and promises to us.  Thanks to the magic of Google, we can now look up the words to any song if it’s meaning isn’t clear.  But back in ye olden days of telephone cords and crimping irons, we only knew the real lyrics with confidence if we bought the cassette tape with the paper insert.

We couldn’t buy every single album of every song we liked.  Even in the opulence of the 80’s we didn’t have that kind of cash.  So we translated our music the best we could.  When I polled my friends and family for their best misheard lyrics to make my point, I laughed until tears ran down my leg.  I knew I had to share this sheer delight with you.  So if you came looking for spiritual enlightenment today, I apologize for disappointing you.  But if you could use belly laughs (and who can’t in our current climate), read on.

Not every musical error will jive with you, but I’ll provide links to help you find the songs you don’t know.  The funniest ones are the songs you know well.  And in an effort to be a little spiritual, I’ve divided them into two categories – 1.  hymns/ praise music and 2.  everything else.  Enjoy.

Hymns/ Praise Music

  1.  I have a feeling there are other kids raised on the Baptist Hymnal that feel me on this one.  The song:  There is a Balm in Gilead.  Well, I didn’t know how a bomb was going to “heal the sin sick soul”, but I swore that’s what we sang.  Even if you know the song you may want to click the link and hear the great Mahalia Jackson belt it out.
  2. One of my high school church choir directors submitted “What a Friend We Have in Cheeses”.  I am glad the friend is actually Jesus because I love cheese a whole lot more than it loves me.
  3. Someone shared with me on FB that she always thought the praise song God is on the Move said that He was on the roof.  Well, the Bible tells us he’s everywhere…
  4. A neighbor told me when the prolific Amy Grant sang “Stand up and sing one more hallelujah”, he always heard, “Come on and sing Wilma hallelujah”.  He claims to have even rewound and listened to it over and over again!  Maybe Mrs. Flintstone was into the praise and worship genre?  I wouldn’t blame her.  We wore that song out at our house.

Everything Else

  1.  Will Smith’s funky dance anthem, Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It becomes a completely different kind of dance as “Kick a Chicken With It”.
  2. Speaking of kicking, let’s kick it way back to 1965, with Herman’s Hermits singing A Must to Avoid.  Must husband’s sweet aunt Barbara thought the line, “She’s a must to avoid” was “She’s a muscular boy”.  In either case, I would stay away.
  3.  A co-worker always sang Sade’s Smooth Operator as “Sue Barbarado”.  Admit it.  If you know that song, you just sang those words.
  4. To a former aerobics student of mine, ACDC’s Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap got a gentler, kinder makeover with “Dirty knees in my dungarees”.
  5. My childhood neighbor brought a more recent tune to play.  Attention by Charlie Puth starts with “You’ve been running ’round, running ’round running ’round, throwing that dirt all on my name”.  But she heard, “throwing that turtle on my knee”.  Poor turtle.
  6. A fellow mom from my daughter’s school thought Janet Jackson wanted to take her on an ice capade instead of Escapade.
  7. Billy Idol’s (somewhat creepy in my opinion) Eyes Without a Face sounded more like “How’s about a date?” to one online friend.
  8. Adele’s Chasing Pavements sounds a lot more fun as “Chasing Penguins”.
  9. Hall and Oates sang about a brutal woman in Maneater.  I’m not sure what’s worse, if she ripped my “world apart” or ripped my “butt apart”.
  10. Green Day’s When I Come Around begged, “I’ve heard it all before, so don’t knock down my door.”  “Sell donuts at my door” sounds a little sweeter (get it?).
  11. There are lots of misunderstood words in Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, but my favorite might be “Here we are now, in containers” for the actual, “Here we are now, entertain us”.
  12. The Eurythmics told us, “Sweet dreams are made of this”, but one friend’s dreams were made of cheese!  I have to admit I may have dreamed of cheese a time or two.
  13. As youngster, I liked the theme song for The Golden Girls.  The sentiment of ride or die friendship resonated with me until the part that said, “And the heart attack would say, ‘Thank you for being a friend.'”  A card with that message makes more sense.
  14. In the early, early 80’s Foreigner sang about love being “Urgent“.  A girlfriend of mine thought they said “virgin”.  And crazy enough, I don’t think this substitution changes the meaning of the song!
  15. 10 years later, R.E.M. sang about losing religion with the chorus, “That’s me in the corner.  That’s me in the spotlight.”  An online friend mistakenly heard, “Let’s pee in the corner.  Let’s pee in the spotlight.”  If you pee in a spotlight, I might lose my religion!

I have many more, but I might need to go change my pants.  So I think I’ll save them for another post.  But let’s keep the laughter going.  Do you have a mistaken lyric to share with us?  Drop it in the comments below.

My consequence is sleepless nights.  Hers was headaches.  I want to share from Barb at mylifeinourfathersworld.com because I don’t believe we are the only ones suffering physical symptoms from lack of peace and trust in God.  Read Under Pressure and let it encourage you.

About Me

I love Jesus, my husband and caffeine. The order of these can change depending on how tired I am. When my two daughters, stepson, and 4 grandchildren get to be too much, I practice yoga. God graciously allows me to share our adventures, victories and flub-ups from my laptop. May He be glorified here.
