Why You Shouldn’t Slow Down this Christmas

December 5, 2019 by Lauren 34 Comments

We are too busy.  Everybody knows it, lots of people feel it, but not many of us know what to do about it.  And this time of year we usually ramp up the hustle and bustle.  There are so many things culture – or our own traditions – tell us we must be doing.  Shopping, wrapping, baking, decorating, going to parties and events.  It can be a hoot, or it can be exhausting.  It can be meaningful, or anxiety inducing.

Every year in December, I encourage my yoga students to evaluate their holiday activities and consider eliminating, or revamping, those that don’t bring them joy and peace.  And I read a meditation to them.  The source or author I have forgotten, so I can’t give credit where it’s due.  But I think it still deserves a share here:

This is the beginning of a new day.  I have been given this day to use as I will.  I can waste it, or I can use it for good.  What I do today is important, because I am exchanging a day of my life for it.  When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place something I have traded for it.  I want it to be gain, not loss; good, not evil; success, not failure; in order that I shall not regret the price I paid for it.

The pastor at the church we attend speaks often of lingering in God’s presence.  But this past Sunday he preached on hurrying to linger with Jesus.  The second chapter of Luke tells a familiar story to believers celebrating Christmas.  Here we read about the birth of Jesus and the host of angels that appeared to a group of shepherds in the field to tell them about it.

Verses 15 and 16 read, “When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.  So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the manger.”  These young men heard the best news the world has ever known – that the Savior of the world came down to earth in the form of a baby to forgive the sins of all who believe.

The Holy Scriptures do NOT indicate that the shepherds sat down and discussed their options, or debated whether or not the announcement was true.  The didn’t clean themselves up first or make arrangements with their families.  They HAULED IT to be with Jesus.  Oh, I’ve been thinking about this message all week.

When was the last time you woke up excitedly anxious to spend time with the Lord?  I hope your answer is better than mine.  If I’m honest, instead of hurrying to get to Him, I often hurry through my time with Him to get to something else.  But when I do linger in His presence – studying His word intently, searching for true meaning – blessings abound.  Like one of those plush blankets we wrap up in, His love envelops me when I sit and listen to Him during prayer.

The richness of time with Jesus is better than the most expensive gift given this holiday, because it changes us.  And that is definitely worth trading my time.  For this reason, and so many others, I’m following the example of the shepherds.  I want my rushing to be in His direction this Christmas.

Advent…In the Waiting

December 20, 2018 by Lauren 22 Comments

As I write this, I am one week removed from another surgery.  This one was much easier than any of last year’s adventures in medicine, but I still need to take it easy.  I have at least one more week of waiting until I can drive, work, or exercise.  I wait…for incisions to heal, for energy levels to rebound and for things to return to “normal”.

During this unexpected “gift” of stillness, I’m using and studying a scripture writing plan.  It begins with the Old Testament prophesies concerning Jesus and ends with…well, the month isn’t over yet…but I wrote today of the angel appearing to Mary In Luke chapter 1 to tell her of the Messiah’s coming and her part in it.

Advent.  Not just waiting, but expectant waiting.  That means hope.  There are promises fulfilled at the end of the waiting.  The Christmas season commemorates the arrival of that hope.  The Savior of the world was born as a baby.  One of His names, Emmanuel, means “God with us.”  He came to be one of us, to be with us, to serve us, to love us and to save us.  But Christmas not only observes this most blessed event, it also celebrates that this child once born in Bethlehem is still with us now.  When we believe in His power and plan to save us from our own sin and the darkness of the world, He abides within us in the form of the Holy Spirit.

And the rescue story continues.  Jesus came, He lives, and He is coming to earth again.  When He comes the 2nd time it will be to defeat the powers of evil once and for all.  It’s not an easy concept to understand, but it’s true.  And it’s my hope.

There would be no reason to celebrate the birth of this baby if He simply came and left us here to languish on this hard and painful earth and die a pointless death of decay. Praise God He didn’t.

He triumphed over sin and death and gives us a way to do the same by simply believing in Him.  And for those who believe, we celebrate His first coming.  His birth in a manger.  And we wait for his 2nd coming.  We wait expectantly through surgeries and pain and joy and grief and loneliness and loveliness.  This world is a mixed bag, but one day He will banish tears and sorrow and sin for good.  Oh praise Him!

The hymn that my heart keeps singing today is “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.”  I sing in celebration of all my Savior has done for me, for all that He continues to do in my life today, and for all the glory I will see in his second coming.  “Rejoice!  Rejoice!”

Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:  “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”, which translated means, “God with us.”  Matthew 1:22-23 NASB

About Me

I love Jesus, my husband and caffeine. The order of these can change depending on how tired I am. When my two daughters, stepson, and 4 grandchildren get to be too much, I practice yoga. God graciously allows me to share our adventures, victories and flub-ups from my laptop. May He be glorified here.
