Praying God’s Word Wednesday #18

August 4, 2021 by Lauren 14 Comments

Happy Hump Day, friends.  And I am feeling the hump.  So I’m praying for myself today from Proverbs 14:29 ESV

Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly.

The Believer’s Bible Commentary equates being “slow to anger” as one who is “patient under provocation”.  “Understanding” = “great insight”.  And a hasty tempered person is also “impulsive”.  But the phrase “exalts folly” gave me the most food for thought.  This angry individual isn’t just foolish, he or she promotes foolishness and “holds it up to public view”.  In other words,

when we flair up quickly, we show everyone in viewing distance and ear shot that we lack good sense.  Who wants to be THAT person?

So here is my simple, but necessary prayer:

Replace the pronouns with the appropriate ones for the person (or yourself) that you are praying for.

Praying for you in this.  And don’t forget to share this on social media or with a friend who could benefit.  It would mean so much to me.  And if you don’t want to miss a Praying God’s Word Wednesday, subscribe over on the right hand side of this page.

Lauren, I love that this post goes along with my own post this morning. May our words be gracious and wise, and full of good sense.

The question “What do you want me to learn from this” is a great speed bump when I am provoked. I’m learning I have to remove myself from provocation to review that question before I respond – and that means figuring out what is my emotional imperfect self in the response – and finding what God wants me to fine. I am still very imperfect in this – your post was just the encouragement I needed!

This is such a great prayer, Lauren. I hate when my temper flares quickly which doesn’t happen often (it is almost always triggered by premenopausal hormones). This gentle reminder and words of prayer are the perfect little nudge to keep perspective in moments of anger. Thanks for sharing and linking with me.

It’s so easy for any of us to loose our cool if we lack awareness and tools.

About Me

I love Jesus, my husband and caffeine. The order of these can change depending on how tired I am. When my two daughters, stepson, and 4 grandchildren get to be too much, I practice yoga. God graciously allows me to share our adventures, victories and flub-ups from my laptop. May He be glorified here.
