Winter Storm 2015

November 12, 2015 by Lauren Leave a Comment

It’s Friday afternoon and snow has been steadily falling all day.  God has squeezed most of our winter weather into this one week.  The kids have been out of school 2 full days and 2 half days out of five.  As is often the case in Texas, the temp is predicted to be 73 degrees by Tuesday, but for now, at least, it looks like a winter wonderland outside of my window.

As a born and raised Texas gal, snow is more uncommon than common.  So it is always an event.  We don’t have equipment for it and we don’t know how to drive on it.  It sends the news media into a frenzy and lots of tires into skids.  So we tend to keep the kids home from school and close as many businesses as possible to keep vehicles at home.  And the kids in my neighborhood grab cookie sheets, laundry baskets, pieces of cardboard, and anything else that will double as a sled and head to the big hill our elementary school sits on.

I prefer to look at it from the warmth of my house, as I sip my hot tea and wiggle my toes inside my fuzzy socks.  The snow is beautiful.  It blankets the rooftops and yards and cars in pure, fluffy white.  I can’t help but think of Isaiah 1:18, “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord.  “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”  God is in the business of forgiveness.  It doens’t matter to God what we have done.  1 John 1:8-9 says, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”  No matter how greatly we feel we have messed up, all we have to do is admit to God that we have, and acknowledge our need of Jesus as savior, and then He makes us brand new – just like the fresh snow.

In Texas, the snow doesn’t last but a day or two – if that.  After the roads have been driven over a few dozen times and the temperature starts to rise, the snow drifts turn into piles of grey, muddy slush.  There isn’t much that looks dirtier or grosser to me.  Such a stark contrast to the bright white it was before.  It saddens me a little – making me wish it didn’t have to change.  And so I see myself.  My sins.  The gift of God’s salvation doesn’t immunize me from future sin.  God still gives us free will, and I am OH SO human.  My opportunity and capacity to blow it remains relatively unchanged.  But my desire to remain clean increases.  Sometimes that helps me stay out of trouble.  Other times it just makes me sad and repentant when I do stray from God’s best for me.  I lie, I watch or read something I shouldn’t, I treat someone with malice, I judge someone unfairly, and then I start to see myself more like the grey slush than the clean white snow.  But the most amazing news is that once we begin a relationship with God, He NEVER sees us as dirty slush again!  “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness (read “right”, “clean”, “sinless”) of God.”   2 Corinthians 5:21.  It doesn’t say we become the righteousness until we screw up again.  It doesn’t say we become the righteousness when we are acting our most christian-like.  It says WE BECOME.  We are right with God forevermore!  He will never see us as anything but perfect and worthy  – and yes, white as snow.  Because Jesus makes us that.  Praise God for this amazing gift!

“Jesus paid it all.
All to Him I owe.
Sin had left a crimson stain.
He washed it white as snow.” – lyrics by Elvina M. Hall, 1865

Medical Cannabis

November 12, 2015 by Lauren Leave a Comment

First bad weather day of the year for us.  Tomorrow is the second.  Allie and a couple of her friends went sledding.  Me, I stayed in my warm house in my pajamas all day.  Gave me lots of time to think about what’s coming on Wednesday.  We are going to the state capital for the very first time to lobby.  We want access to CBD oil (a form of medical marijuana) for Shelby.  I am so excited to get involved.  To be proactive in getting Shelby the treatment she needs.  We are involved in a group called C.A.F.E Texas.  That stands for “compassionate access for epilepsy”.  Although this is a very condensed version of Shelby’s story, I thought I would share with you what is posted on the C.A.F.E Texas website and what is being sent to our Senators and Representatives.

Life is full of surprises and having a child born with a disorder we knew nothing about was a big one. It’s funny how you can become an expert on something when you need to be. And we needed to be. Our daughter Shelby began having generalized tonic clonic seizures before she was 5 months old. We were petrified. It’s a helpless feeling to watch your child suffer. The helplessness multiplied as we tried endless pharmaceutical combinations and treatments (including the ketogenic diet and the Vagus Nerve Stimulator), hoping that the next one would bring control. An now, almost 15 years later, control still eludes us. When Shelby was 8 years old, we finally had a diagnosis for what we had simply been calling a seizure disorder – Dravet Syndrome.

Shelby has severe developmental delays. At 14, she operates like a child not quite 2. She speaks in one-word utterances, can’t run, needs help feeding herself and is still in diapers. She has low muscle tone and has to use a wheelchair at times. Some of these delays are due to the gene mutation she carries. Some, we have no doubt, are the result of the huge doses of expensive anticonvulsant medication she has been taking for all of her young life. Her medications also cause constant sleep disturbances. In the last calendar year, we can count on one hand the nights of uninterrupted sleep we have all had.

Despite the challenges, Shelby is a wonderful gift from God. I have watched her bring out the best in those around her. Her special gift is love. She brightens the day of many strangers as she asks for hugs wherever we go. But we have exhausted all current options for increasing seizure control and increasing physical and intellectual development. So we fight to turn over rocks left untouched and pray for something different to treat her. We don’t believe God is through with Shelby yet. There are many lives left for her to touch.

We beg for your prayers as we meet with people who will make important decisions regarding the future treatment for Shelby and others like her.

What I Learned from IF

November 12, 2015 by Lauren Leave a Comment

Twice now I have written this same post and then it has disappeared into the black hole of technology. I started to wonder if I was supposed to publish this. I decided that putting words to what God is teaching me and doing through me is kind of like having an accountability partner. So here goes:

If you haven’t heard of IF:Gathering, that’s probably because it’s a brand new movement. This women’s event started last year in Austin, Texas and features some of the top speakers and authors in Christiandom. It is simulcast all over the world and for the last 2 years I’ve had the privilege to participate from close to home in Grapevine. Although I really enjoyed the preaching last year, I believe God used their messages this year to do a brand new work in my heart. But I need to back up a bit to have even a hope of explaining to you what I have been processing for the last 5 days. I have always tested very high in “faith” on Spiritual Gift inventories (you know, the tests you take when your church is soliciting volunteers for children’s Bible class and you KNOW you don’t want to do THAT). I never doubt God or my salvation. I know that He is good and that he loves me and all of humanity. I can trust Him with the BIG things. Cancer, death, taxes and politics – all those things you aren’t supposed to talk about at dinner parties – they are so big that there is precious little I can do to impact them. Take death, for example. If you are alive, there is a 100% chance that you will die. It’s in God’s hands. So I’m not tempted to try to take it from Him. Shelby’s seizures and development – big. I trust God with her, because He has a plan and He loves her more than I do. But I struggle to trust God in my day-to-day life. My mundane activities are so small, so I tend to tackle them in my own strength. And I’m doing a bang-up job of it. And I mean “bang-up” in the messed up, beat up and beat down sense of the word. Most days I spend some time reading God’s word and writing down a few prayers, but then I push God out of the driver’s seat and have a head-on collision with the rest of my day. I make decisions without consulting Him, talk to friends and family members without mentioning Him, and order my to-do list without a thought to His plans for me. Here’s what God revealed to me that He is doing about it. He is taking away some of the “crutches” I’ve been using to bolster my own strength. 1. I am a fitness instructor who is now overweight. I used to take pride in my athletic build and muscle tone. Now I have injuries that keep me from doing a lot of the things I used to do and a layer of blubber covering my muscles. God wants to do the lifting for me. 2. I used to turn to a big group of friends for comfort and support. Now as our kids get older and busier, we are getting older and busier (I’m not sure why I threw “older” in. It’s TRUE, but neither here nor there).  There is no longer enough time for many lunches and leisurely coffees. But God is whispering to me, “I have time. Sit with me.” 3. I like to shop. A lot. I don’t spend a lot of money, but I love a good deal and could nickel and dime our bank account into oblivion. Clearance racks are my kryptonite. Buying myself a little pretty feels so soothing to me when I’m tired or frustrated or stressed out. But last year Chuck and I made our family time a priority so he accepted a job with better hours and less pay. He still provides for us beyond what we need, but my shopping cushion is gone. And God is showing Himself to be the Comforter that I never looked for Him to be.  None of these changes in my life are earth shattering, because God knows how to get my attention.  Remember how I told you that it’s pretty easy for me to trust God with the big things in life?  If my world came crashing down, I would run to HIm and fall flat on my face.  And although I know He wants that, He also wants to teach me to do it on a daily basis.  Not only on a catastrophy basis.

Well, I realized this weekend that without my normal pick-me-ups, I have been living a pretty safe existence.  I’ve had a need to see how things are going to work out before diving into something.  I’ve calculated costs and wondered if I was enough (ideas from Jennie Allen).  But I’m tired and bored with that life.  I’m ready to give my faith away instead of holding onto it for myself.  And as Jen Hatmaker says, “You don’t have to have full confidence in yourself – just in God.”  I don’t have to be enough, because He is.  All I have to do is be obedient to Him, “results are God’s responsibility” – Bianca Olthoff.  I am ready to live in the fullness that God has for me.  And that fullness is not guarded or complacent.  The fullness gives, and gives some more! (from Rebekah Lyons).  So I’m working to set aside fear AND my own paltry strength.  There is work to do that can only be accomplished through His perfect strength.  And “service, not performance prepares us for battle” – Chris Caine.  So, I’m starting out by contacting a couple of local ministries that God has laid on my heart.  As long as there are hurting, needy people in the world, I will volunteer.  And as long as there are people who don’t know how much my Savior loves them, I will talk about Him.  So, friends, you are put on notice.  Our relationship my look a little different.  You may get tired of my message, but I can’t apologize for the fire that He has put in heart.

“And blessed is she would believed that there would be a fulfillment of what had been spoken to her by the Lord.”  Luke 1:45

About Me

I love Jesus, my husband and caffeine. The order of these can change depending on how tired I am. When my two daughters, stepson, and 4 grandchildren get to be too much, I practice yoga. God graciously allows me to share our adventures, victories and flub-ups from my laptop. May He be glorified here.
