Nationaltoday.com says March 11 is Worship of Tools Day. What? I think I’ll write about worship that makes more sense. And throw in a biology term. I subscribe to a Word of the Day e-mail and this week, the word “tropism” captured my imagination.
My mom and daughter bond over their love of biology and other types of science. I guess that skipped a generation. I can’t be bothered, but this definition instantly reminded me of following Jesus. And that is my jam.
Tropism – the turning of all or part of an organism in a particular direction in response to an external stimulus.
My mind immediately went to the plants in my kitchen window. They always grow in the direction of the sun (if I don’t kill them first). Eventually, the vegetation will look so lopsided that I will need to turn the pot to allow growth in another area.
As followers of Christ, we should be ever growing toward the Son. Being human, we often have parts of ourselves that we try to keep away from Him. For this reason, it is good to have other believers in our lives who can see our growth patterns (accountability) and gently turn us to shine His light on the hidden parts.
“but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”
2 Peter 3:18 NIV

I’m a plant lover so that was a beautiful and excellent illustration for me. I will have to remember that! Turn to Jesus like plants turn toward the sun!
Lauren says
I wish I loved and was good with plants! I’m glad it hit home for you, Amy.
Barbara Harper says
Thanks for the mention!
At first glance, I would have thought tropism would have referred to writers who use too many tropes. 😀 I’ve had plants do that–grow towards the light and need to be turned–but I didn’t realize there was a name for it. What a lovely illustration of our need to behold Him and grow in His light.
Lauren says
Thank you, Barbara. And my pleasure to get to point people to your writing!
Joanne Viola says
Lauren, you pulled a beautiful analogy from the term “tropism”. So important to have people in our lives who can always point us to Jesus.
Lauren says
Yes! I’m so thankful for mine. And I count you and my other blogger friends in that category!
Donna B Reidland says
The older I get the more I see just how much we need each other for accountability and for encouragement. And even when we don’t think we need someone else, there is someone we should be coming alongside. Praying for you and your husband in this season of your life.
Lauren says
I think you are so right, Donna! And thank you so much for your prayers!
Debbie Wilson says

Thinking about gardening these days (waiting for the weather to cooperate!), brings this illustration to life, “As followers of Christ, we [need to] be ever growing toward the Son.” Amen!
Lauren says
Thank you for reading along, Lisa.

I remember doing all the tropism experiments back in my homeschooling life, but I had forgotten the term. I am going to enjoy meditating on this idea!
Lauren says
Me too, Michele. Thank you!

What a kind thing to say, Holly. Thank you.

Jeanne says
Ahhh, Lauren. I love the image of tropism and worship. May we be like sunflowers, always inclining our heads and hearts toward Jesus. And, may we be vulnerable before Him to allow Him into those hidden areas in our hearts.
Lauren says
Amen, Jeanne.
Jan says
May we continue to grow towards the Light-wonderful analogy.
Lauren says
Thank you, Jan.
Tea With Jennifer says
Beautiful illustration Lauren. And I hear you with killing plants!
I was given a beautiful white orchid for my birthday recently & I followed the directions to a T.
But it still died, 🤔 I was a bit sad because it was a gift from my daughters & grandchildren.
Blessings,
Jennifer

I would be sad too, Jennifer! Thanks for reading along.
